When you apply for Canadian citizenship by descent, you normally apply for a proof of citizenship certificate rather than a grant of citizenship. Here are the practical steps you should follow.

Can I Apply for a Canadian Citizenship Certificate Online?

Currently, most citizenship by descent applicants must apply on paper. However, some applicants may be eligible to apply online, depending on their circumstances.

You can check the application requirements (online/or on paper) on the official Immigration Canada website:

Which Forms Do I Need for a Citizenship Certificate?

CIT0001 is the main application form you need to complete, along with CIT0014, which is the document checklist.

If you were born on or after December 15, 2025, you may also need to complete form CIT0555.

If you want to change your sex or gender designation, you need to complete form IRM-0002.

What Documents Do I Need Before Applying?

You need your country-specific birth certificate showing the names of your parent(s), issued by the original government authority in the country where you were born.

You also need to prove the parent-child relationship for each generation, starting with yourself and going back to your Canadian ancestor. You must provide documents showing how your ancestor became Canadian, either by birth or naturalization.

For each generation, supporting documents should be issued by the original authorities rather than third-party websites. However, these websites can be a great starting point for your research.

You also need two pieces of identification, proof of payment (CAD $75 for each applicant), and proof of any legal name changes.

How Do I Submit My Application from the United States?

As mentioned earlier, in most cases, you must apply on paper. The mailing address is listed in form CIT0014.

You must also organize your application package according to Immigration Canada’s instructions.

What Happens After I Submit My Application?

After IRCC receives your application, it checks whether all required forms and documents have been submitted.

If the application is complete, IRCC will issue an acknowledgment of receipt (AOR) with an application number. This may take some time.

IRCC may later request additional documents or ask questions that you must answer carefully and within the specified timeframe.

What If IRCC Returns My Application as Incomplete?

If your application is missing anything, even a required signature or a mandatory document, IRCC may return it as incomplete.

This means your application will not enter processing until you submit a complete application. You will need to correct the missing information and submit it again, which can significantly delay your case.

Since citizenship certificate applications can already involve lengthy processing times, it is important to get everything right the first time.
