Who Can Request Urgent Processing When Applying for Canadian Citizenship by Descent?

Immigration Canada has clearly identified the situations in which you can request urgent processing of a Canadian citizenship certificate.

Urgent processing can significantly reduce the processing time, which is currently very long.

There are several situations in which you may qualify. Some of the most relevant ones for citizenship by descent applicants are summarized below. Other situations may also qualify for urgent processing but are not covered here.

1. To Avoid Harm or Hardship

You may request urgent processing if you face harm or hardship due to factors such as religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or membership in a particular group.

2. For Employment or Education

You may qualify if you are at risk of losing a job offer or need to attend a college or university.

3. To Access Social Benefits

You may request urgent processing if you need to apply for social benefits, such as a pension, healthcare, or a Social Insurance Number.

4. To Move Your Minor Child to Canada

You may qualify if you want to bring your child under 18 to Canada, and the child was born abroad to a Canadian parent.

In these situations, you must provide a clear explanation of why your application is urgent, along with supporting documents.

If your request for urgent processing is approved, your processing time may be significantly reduced. If it is not approved, your application will follow the normal processing timeline.

What If My Application Is Incomplete?

Even if your urgent processing request is approved, IRCC may return your application if it is incomplete.

For example, if documents are missing, sections of your application form are left blank, or the required fee has not been paid, your application may be returned, even if your situation is urgent.
